If you’ve recently found out that you are pregnant and are considering abortion, there are key medical details you need to know before making a decision in order to protect your health.
While a pregnancy test confirms the presence of hCG, it doesn’t show what’s happening with the pregnancy inside the uterus.
Ridgeway Women’s Clinic provides a Pre-Abortion Evaluation that includes pregnancy testing, limited ultrasound, STI testing and treatment, and information about your next steps.
We are here to help you get the answers you need to move forward confidently.

1. Pregnancy Viability Matters
About 10 to 20% of known pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage. A positive pregnancy test can still occur after a miscarriage due to lingering hCG (a pregnancy hormone) in the body.
An ultrasound can detect whether a fetal heartbeat is present. If no heartbeat is detected, it may be too early, or the pregnancy may have ended naturally.
If you have had a miscarriage, the focus shifts from making a pregnancy decision to receiving any necessary follow-up medical care.
2. It Identifies The Location Of Your Pregnancy
A normal pregnancy will implant inside the uterus; however, in around 2% of pregnancies, there is a chance of an ectopic pregnancy, where the egg implants outside of the uterus, most of the time in the fallopian tube.
The abortion pill cannot treat an ectopic pregnancy, and this condition needs urgent medical attention to prevent further complications, which is why an ultrasound is so important.
3. How Far Along You Are Impacts Your Options
How far along the pregnancy is, also known as the gestational age, impacts your options. For example, the abortion pill is FDA-approved through ten weeks of gestation. Taking the drugs beyond this time frame could increase the risk of complications.
Trying to estimate how far along your pregnancy is based on your last period is inaccurate, especially if you have irregular cycles.
