If you think you might be pregnant, you may be wondering how pregnancy tests actually work. Can you trust their accuracy? When should you take a pregnancy test?

Understanding how and when to take a test can clarify things and help you have greater confidence in the test’s results.

At Ridgeway Women’s Clinic, we offer free pregnancy confirmation services so you can verify the results of your at-home test. Our team is here to help you get answers regardless of which pregnancy outcome you’re considering, at no cost to you.

How Pregnancy Tests Detect hCG

Pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). The body produces this hormone shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus and begins to rise rapidly in early pregnancy.

Most home pregnancy tests use a urine sample. They’re easy to use and can provide results in just a few minutes. While convenient, the accuracy of these tests depends on when and how they’re used.

There are also blood-based pregnancy tests, which a healthcare provider typically orders. Blood-based tests can detect smaller amounts of hCG and are sometimes used to monitor how hCG levels change over time.

Why Timing Matters

For the most accurate results, it’s best to take a pregnancy test after you’ve missed your period. Waiting, while difficult, gives your body time to produce enough hCG for the test to detect.

Testing first thing in the morning when your urine is most concentrated can also improve the chances of an accurate reading. Our medical team can help guide you through your options if you’re unsure about your timing or symptoms.
