Who can prescribe the abortion pill?
The abortion pill [which is two pills] can only be administered in a clinic by a doctor or licensed medical professional. If you receive them from anyone else, we strongly advise not taking it.
How far into pregnancy can you take these pills?
They is effective for up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. The earlier it is taken, the more effective it will be.
How does it work?
The first pill is a medicine called mifepristone, which causes the fetus to stop growing. The second pill is a medicine called misoprostol, which causes the uterus to discharge the fetus. The second pill is taken anywhere from 2 hours to 48 hours after the first. There are side effects to the abortion pill such as cramping and bleeding. Some women experience vomiting, chills, and fever. Approximately two weeks after taking these pills, the woman should schedule another appointment to verify the abortion was successful. If not, the failed abortion could cause a severe infection.
How effective is the abortion pill?
For those who are 8-weeks pregnant or less, the abortion pill is up to 98% effective. Women 8-9 weeks pregnant report it is effective 96% of the time and 93% for 9-10 weeks pregnant. If your first medical abortion is ineffective, you may be able to take second dosing of the abortion pill or have a surgical abortion performed at an additional cost. If you’re having second thoughts at this point, there is an abortion reversal pill now available.
What should your first steps be?
Before you make an appointment to get the abortion pill, there are a few steps you should take first.
First, make sure, when confirming your pregnancy, to use a lab-quality pregnancy test accompanied by an ultrasound. An ultrasound determines the gestational age of the pregnancy and if your body is preparing for a miscarriage. Not many women know that as many as half of pregnancies end in miscarriage. In addition to both these services, the second step should be to schedule a pre-abortion evaluation.
