Discussing the mental health effects from abortion has long been a controversial topic because every woman will react differently to her abortion experience.

However, experts do agree that at least some women do experience negative health impacts, which is why it is so critical to think through your own personal mental health situation before making an abortion decision.

Mental Health Findings and Abortion

Even though emotions and mental health vary so greatly between each woman, Cambridge Press did conduct a widespread review of twenty-two studies.

These studies examined the responses of 877,181 participants with 163,831 of them experiencing an abortion.

Through this review, they found that women who experience an abortion have an 81% increased risk of mental health problems. Nearly 10% of the incidence of mental health problems could be directly attributable to abortion.

Some of the mental health effects analyzed include anxiety, depression, substance use, and suicidal behaviors.

Who Is at a Higher Risk for Negative Mental Health Impacts?

As mentioned earlier, experts do agree that at least some women experience significant negative mental health impacts and there are certain risk factors to consider.

Women who have had a history of mental illness or feel pressured into an abortion are more at risk.

Also, women who choose abortion without giving sufficient attention to maternal desires or moral beliefs could have a more difficult time reconciling their abortion decision with their self-identities.

Since abortion is a personal and life-changing decision, we recommend every woman make a decision for her future with confidence and certainty, regardless of any pressure she may experience.

Ask Yourself the Hard Questions

Only you can predict how you may react to an abortion based on what you know about yourself.

Do you have a history of mental health issues? Are you currently experiencing pressure? Consider your answers as you think through your plans. It’s important to be honest with yourself.
